Poetics, Paraphernalia and Paint: The Artworks of John Hathorn

Near the entrance to “John Hathorn – A Retrospective” at the Acadiana Center for the Arts, there is a small, rather unassuming painting on the title wall of the exhibition. It is a vertically oriented, rectangular canvas which has been treated with a thin, umber, oil paint wash and slathered with a thick impasto of red oil paint which virtually obliterates the support surface. The red paint was probably built up with the help of a palette knife over the course of several days or weeks or months … maybe even years? The skin of the painting is as luscious and dense as cake frosting, but looking at it feels more like looking a slab of bloody meat. An old specimen vile containing powdered, red pigment hangs from the bottom of the canvas, calling extra attention to the not-so-secret ingredient that makes this painting hit one square between the eyes. One’s pulse quickens. One’s mouth moistens. Desire takes hold, and the color red is in the driver’s seat.

Speaking of journeys, it is somewhat easy to fantasize about taking one on Hathorn’s sublime “Raft.” The sculpture is a wooden platform covered with rugs, paintings, drawings, personal notes and other objects which hovers inches above the floor of the gallery and is suspended from the ceiling via a sturdy rope. The other end of the rope is wrapped and tied around a wooden palette topped by stone slabs and salt blocks on the other side of the gallery. The piece dominates the entrance to the exhibition.

Hathorn’s “Raft” looks like a cross between a raft, a magic carpet, a cabinet of curiosities, a studio, a DaVinci-esque science project and a construction site – all things which speak to exoticism, travel, transformation from one state to another, and/or a belief in or a hope for a better future. It is a highly personal, artistic gesture in that Hathorn used lumber left over from the construction of the studio he shares with his wife, artist Mary Ellen Leger, to make the piece. Add to that the personal ephemera and paraphernalia from Hathorn’s own practice in the completed studio, and one has access to a slice of the artist’s life, work and process combined.

Yet, Hathorn’s aspirations for the piece go beyond the personal and move toward the universal and the Romantic. One of the inspirations for the piece is Theodore Gericault’s masterpiece “The Raft of the Medusa,” a 19th century painting depicting the aftermath of the shipwreck of a French frigate off the coast of Senegal in 1816. Another inspiration for “Raft” is William Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest,” which unfolds around the central character of Prospero, a deposed duke and a magus who is trapped on a deserted island. In the play, Prospero plots to regain his title by unleashing a storm on his enemies while they are at sea which causes their ship to wreck, forcing them onto the shores of Prospero’s island where he reigns supreme. Between these allusions and the physical manifestation of “Raft” itself, one is set adrift to peruse the individual materials that together compose the work and ponder what it means to seek and find refuge in uncertain times. In Hathorn’s case, text, image and personal effects fuse to create a secure and fertile ground upon which his life and creative spirit thrive.

Gisèle McCaie - New Maryland (New Brunswick) - Councillor

Gisèle McCaie-Burke, daughter of Réginald McCaie and Simone Léger, was born in Moncton and has been a resident of New Maryland since 1995. She was first elected to the village council in May, 2008 as Councillor. This is her second foray into municipal politics. In May 2012, she was re-elected on council and was appointed as Deputy Mayor after receiving the highest number of votes. She has been taking an active role in community betterment for more than 30 years.

Councillor McCaie-Burke was the Chair of the Emergency Response Plan Committee until November 2014. She was also the Chair of the former Transportation and Protective Services Committee and Vice-Chair of the former Water and Wastewater Committee. Her other village committee involvements were Chair of the former Human Resources and Administration Committee and Vice-Chair of the Planning Advisory Committee. Gisèle is also currently serving on the board of directors of the Union of the Municipalities of New Brunswick.

Gisèle’s educational background includes a Bachelor degree in Nutritional Science, l’Université de Moncton; dietetic internship, Montreal Diet Dispensary; Master’s degree in Adult Education, University of New Brunswick.

Councillor McCaie-Burke’s career experience during some 30 years in the dietetic/nutrition field has been considerable. Her job postings with the provincial Department of Health have included: regional public health nutritionist; dietitian, Extra Mural program; departmental nutrition consultant, and project manager. After retiring from the health field, Gisèle returned to the work force for two years with Statistics Canada as Senior Interviewer, Fredericton region. Her past volunteer activities have included: president of the New Brunswick Association of Dietitians; president, Canadian Diabetes Association-NB Division; director, National Board of the Canadian Diabetes Association; president, the Breastfeeding Committee for Canada; director, Big Brothers-Big Sisters; director, Bathurst Volunteer Centre & Food Bank; trustee, School District #42; founder, Bathurst School Milk Fund.

In her leisure time, Gisèle enjoys spending time with her husband Ray, family and friends, reading, cooking, gardening, travelling and researching genealogy.

Alphonsine Boucher, 100 years old, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family at the Foyer Saint-Antoine on Sunday July 14, 2019. She was married to the late Théophile Boucher (1981). Born in Saint-Paul, she was the daughter of the late Alphonse and the late Annie (Goguen) Bernard. She will be sadly missed by her six children; Marie-Anne Léger (Raoul), Alice Caissie (late Gerard), Lucie Williams (Raymond) of Saint-Antoine, Irène Cormier (Aurèle) of Moncton, Annie
Léger (Jean) of Moncton and Yvon of Saint-Paul, her sixteen grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren as well as several nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by one daughter Ida, four sisters; Léona, Sr Euphrasie (Alice), Elise and Marie and eight brothers; Henri, Désiré, Arthur, Adelard, Léonide, Aimé, Aurèle and Alfred. Visitations will be held at the Saint-Antoine L’Ermite Roman Catholic Church Slumber Room, Saint-Antoine on Wednesday July 17 from 7 to 9 and on Thursday July 18 at the Saint-Paul-de-Kent Roman Catholic Church Slumber Room, from 2 to 3:45 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Saint-Paul-de-Kent Church on Thursday July 18, 2019 at 4:00 pm with interment in the parish cemetery. In Alphonsine’s memory, donations may be made to the Foyer Saint-Antoine. Funeral arrangements are in the professional care of Maillet Funeral Home, Bouctouche.

Yvonne Gauvin 1918-2019 Au CHU Dr-Georges-L.-Dumont, le samedi 1 juin 2019, est décédée à l'âge de 100 ans, Yvonne Gauvin, de Grande-Digue. Née à Grande-Digue, le 2 juin 1918, elle était la fille de feu Hector et Amanda (Vautour) Bourgeois. Yvonne était co-propriétaire du camping, Plage Gauvin. Elle était membre de l'Institut Féminin et du Club d'Age d'Or à Grande-Digue. Elle donna plusieurs heures de son temps à Notre-Centre comme bénévole. Elle laisse dans le deuil quatre filles: Josette Gionet (Bertrand) de Shediac, Hectorine Léger (Jean-Guy), Roberta LeBlanc (feu Donald) et Joanne Gauvin tous trois de Grande-Digue; six petits-enfants et quatre arrières-petits-enfants; une belle-soeur, Thérèse Bourgeois ainsi que plusieurs nièces et neveux. Elle était la dernière survivante de sa famille immédiate. Outre son époux Edgar (1986), elle fut précédée dans la tombe par une fille, Marguerite (1979), ses soeurs et frères: Rita, Rosa, Saddie, Léo, Livain, Noé, Donat et Elie. La famille recevra les condoléances au Centre funéraire et de crémation Frenette, 396, rue Main, Shediac le mardi 4 juin de 14h à 16h et de 19h à 21h seulement. Les funérailles seront célébrées en l'église La Visitation, 416 Route 530, Grande-Digue le mercredi 5 juin à 11heures. L'inhumation se fera au Cimetière paroissial. Waltham – Mrs. Flora (Leger) Clancy, of Waltham, died Saturday, July 6, 2019, her 102nd birthday.

Flora was born in Fitchburg, a daughter of the late Napoleon and Emma (Landry) Leger and was raised in New Ipswich, New Hampshire. She moved to Waltham in 1946 where she went to work at the Waltham Watch Factory before her marriage to Waltham native John J. Clancy who died in February, 1992.

She leaves her children, Sheila A. Clancy of Waltham and Maureen J. Clancy of Nashua, New Hampshire and several nieces and nephews.

Flora was also a sister of the late Yvon, Ernest, Francis, Adris, Alyre and Edward Leger, Evelyn Seretto and Helen Brown.

RANDALL, FRED A.

On Thursday June 6, 2019, the 75th anniversary of D-Day, Fred Randall, a 30 year member of the United States Armed Forces, passed away at the age of 103. Born on January 1, 1916 in Schenectady he was the son of Charles and Mae Belle Randall. He graduated from S. Glens Falls High School. On May 11, 1945 Fred enlisted in the United States Army serving in the 18th Infantry Regiment. Following active duty He continued in the Army National guard retiring in 1975 as a sergeant 1st class after 30 years of service to our country. Fred also maintained his civilian career as a machinist at the General Electric Co. retiring after 33 years of service. His affiliations include life memberships with the VFW Post 8692 in Colonie and the 1st infantry division WWIIveterans society. For more than 90 years Fred was a member of the Local 85 musicians union. Fred Randall was predeceased by his children, Charles Randall and Carolyn (Randall) Dzamba. He is survived by his grandchildren, Charles D. Randall (Lori Hilson), Thomas Randall (Ruth Randall) and Danielle Dzamba (John Martino). His great-grandchildren, Andrew and Charisa Ledger, Brooke Randall, Kaylin Dzamba, Sierra and Johnny Martino. Also his two great-great-grandchildren, Calysa and Clayton Moody. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at St. John the Evangelist Church 806 Union St., Schenectady. STEVENSON, HILDA

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Hilda Disher announce her passing on June 6, 2019 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in Saint John on July 27, 1917 she was a daughter of the late John and Alice (Barraclough) Stevenson. Hilda was a proud, lifelong member of St. Mary and St. Bartholomew’s Church. She loved to dance and spending time with her family. She will be missed by all who knew her. Hilda is survived by her daughters, Carol vonRichter and Janet (Al) MacNichol; grandchildren, Kathy (Lee) Arnold, Cindy (David) Marks, Mark (Teresa) vonRichter, Keith MacNichol and Amy MacNichol (Ray Legere); seven great– grandchildren and three great–great–grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Hilda was predeceased by her first husband Walter Allaby; second husband, Robert Disher; sister, Emily Staddon (the late George); brother, Jack Stevenson (the late Eileen) and son–in–law, Alward vonRichter. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634–7424) with visitation on Monday, June 10, 2019 from 6 PM to 8 PM. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at 10:00 AM from Brenan’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment to take place in Fernhill Cemetery. Justin Léger, fils d’Henri Léger et de Fanchette Bouvier, né le 17 novembre 1882 à Saint-Eustache (74) France. Il épouse Céline Adelphine Hugon, fille de Cyprien Hugon et de Louise Vagnard, le 13 août 1908 à La Chapelle-Saint-Maurice (74) France. Justin Léger est mort pour la France durant la deuxième guerre mondiale, soit le 7 août 1918 à l’Hôpital Complémentaire de la Garenne-les-Metz dans la Commune de Jouy-en-Josas (78) France. Ils eurent trois enfants dont la dernière est né après le décès de son père. Dans tous les actes d’enregistrements de leurs naissances, nous retrouvons la mention « Pupilles de la Nation » - Tribunal d’Annecy (74) France – Jugement du 12 juin 1919. Voici les trois enfants :

2. Edouard Alphonse Léger, 5 mai 1914 dans le Hameau de Chez Pugel à Saint-Eustache (74) France. Il épouse Germaine Céline Servettaz, le 29 mai 1948 à Etercy (74) France.

3. Marie Augustine Léger, née le 12 mai 1919 dans le Hameau de Chez Pugel à Saint-Eustache (74) France. Elle épouse Léon Alphonse Petit, le 28 février 1942 à Saint-Eustache (74) France.

Naomi Riling Holloman, 100, a resident of Lake Charles passed from this life on March 29, 2019 surrounded by her family in the comfort of her own home. She was a native of Lake Charles and lived there all of her life. She was a graduate of Saint Charles Academy in 1936 and was a faithful member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. She was a member of the Adoration Group since 1991. Naomi was a junior Catholic daughter at 16 years old and at 17, became a member of the Catholic Daughters and the Alter Society and continued until the time of her death. Mrs. Holloman served for 20 years with the annual Retreat for the aged. She was a member of the Saint Monica study club, which began in 1940 with some graduates of St. Charles Academy and stayed together until almost all died. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mathilda Riling Sr.; husband, William P. Holloman Sr.; her daughter, Paula Marie Holloman; her son, William P. Holloman Jr.; son-in-law, John Trouth; sisters, Margaret Pendarvis (David) and Gertrude Cleaton (James); and brother, George Riling Jr. (Bea). She leaves to cherish her memory her loving children, Deanie Holloman Klepzig and husband Charles of Lake Charles and Julia Holloman Trouth of Carlyss; brother, Frank Riling; grandchildren, Paul Tassin (Anne), Melisse Leger (David), Melinda Thibodeaux (Craig), Daniel Wolf, Nicholas W. Lewing, Zachary P. Lewing, William Holloman III (Michelle), Christopher Holloman, David Champion (Penny) and Michael Champion (Tiffany); 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A special thank you to Brighton Bridge, especially Melinda Keller and Geneva Wilson; her caregivers, Doris Celestine, Retta Broussard, Betty Theriot, Karen Fuselier and Rhonda Sullivan; Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Sally Lawrence; and the Lowrys who drove Mrs. Holloman to Perpetual Adoration for a number of years. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to a local church mission or a charity of their choice in Mrs. Holloman's memory. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service Tuesday, April 2, 2019, in the chapel of Lakeside Funeral Home. A rosary will be prayed at 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at Our Lady Queen of Heaven. Monsignor Danny Torres is to officiate. Burial will follow at Consolata Cemetery.
